Swim Award Banquet - Sun., April 20, 2008...Complete Info

2008 MA Mini Championship

Our team placed 8th for boys teams overall and combined, even with the small number of swimmers, the Ocean City C-Cerpants placed a respectable 10th.  The Mini Championships are a great meet to demonstrate just how far our swimmers have come after a season of hard work and effort.  This is a definite must-do meet for all our 8 and under swimmers.  Congratulations to everyone!

Steven Barnard, 6 and under, was fearless as he faced his events.  He swam personal bests for each race and snagged 3 ribbons for his trophy case.  The intrepid Matthew Nunan recorded a personal best in 25 freestyle by 4 seconds and went on to prove that

4 year olds can swim 50 freestyle without drowning.  He even beat a couple of the older swimmers.

For the seven year old girls, Ryann Styer heated up the pool with two wins in 50 breast stroke and 25 freestyle and placed 5th in the 100 free.  Daniel Nunan was a force to be reckoned with as he raced to win nine of his ten events while breaking two meet records, the 100 freestyle and the 50 backstroke, in the process.  Daniel also earned the 7 year old boys high point award and accrued the highest number of points of any swimmer present at the meet.

For the girls, 8 year old Maggie Wallace turned in two days of her fastest times, swimming new events and distances better than ever before while dropping an amazing eight seconds in her 100 IM.  Aleva Parker came on strong in all her events while taking 9th in the 50 breaststroke and dropping more than 4 seconds in her 50 freestyle time.

Our own Tony Wilson, 8 years old, challenged himself in 3 events dropping 3 seconds off his best 50 backstroke time.  Douglas Grisbaum charged through 9 events en route to nine new personal bests while closing in on the top 16 times at the meet earning 19th place in 100 breaststroke.

Though small in number, the Ocean City C-Cerpants were big in spirit as they went up against the best in the region at the Mini Championships held at GCIT March 29-30.  The championship meet allows swimmers ages 8 and under to swim in their own age division in various events and distances.  When our C-Cerpant swimmers swam, they meant business.

What a great weekend at Junior Olympics!!!

11 OCCC athletes swam to some of their best times and scored in the top of their age group’s in the Mid Atlantic Region.

Thursday night Bethany Desmond, Casey Merrill, Erin Myers, and Emily Barnard started the four day meet on fire. Bethany dropped 3 seconds off her 1000 free and Casey’s time in the 1000 free fell 14 seconds. Erin and Emily swam the 500 free. Erin scored 4th place finish and Emily finished 6th.

Friday the pool started heating up in the morning w/ drops in the 500 by the distance duo Casey and Bethany. But when it came to the 9-10 session the pool lit on fire. John Gregory dropped 2 seconds off his 100 Breast. Erin, Emily, and Amanda Nunan were a force to be dealt with in the 200 free. Erin finished 3rd (2:15.46), Emily finished third (2:15.99), and Amanda proved to be the top 9 year old in the meet with the time of 2:24.90. Sam Boswell stepped to the plate and hit a home run with her 50 fly, swimming her way to an 8th place finish (32.53). Erin, Emily, Sam, and Amanda swim the 100 I.M. and total combined drop was 22 seconds, WOW! But as soon as you think it can’t get any better it does. The OCCC 9-10 girls NJ State Meet Champs in the 200 free relay had their sights set on a J.O. first place finish. At NJ State Meet their time was 2:02:02. This seeded them 6th place. It was like the Giants against the Patriots, Erin Myers lead off the relay w/ a split time of 28.22; Gabby Breazeale dove in and clinched second w/ her split of 31.38. Sam Boswell w/ an amazing 3rd leg dove in and split a 26.43 which put OCCC ahead by 2 seconds. As the crowd went wild Emily Barnard anchored the relay and added 2 more seconds to the lead and won the race w/ her split of 28.37. The total time was 1:54.40, off .38 of the MA J.O. record. This time is a National Age Group reportable time. Congratulations ERIN, GABBY, SAM, and EMILY (2008 J.O. CHAMPS).

The excitement from Saturday left coach Pattie speechless, literally. She lost her voice and it made coach J.R. so excited he shaved his beard. As Saturday rolled in Sydney Boswell swam a best time in the 100 Back (1:06.56). The 9-10 girls showed their dominance in the 50 free style and the 100 back. Erin Myers placed 4th in the 50 free and Amanda Nunan dropped 2 seconds w/ the time of 30.96. Tommy Cusack swam the 50 in 32.02. But once again the 9-10 girls go into the medley relay as the underdogs seeded 10th place. This puts them in the 1st heat which greatly puts them at a disadvantage, but this did not stop them from laying the smack down. The relay of Amanda Nunan, Sam Boswell, Erin Myers, and Emily Barnard pull off a 3rd place finish w/ a time of 2:18.44. Only a couple of 100’s of a second away from second place.

Sunday, when everyone thought their gas tank was empty they reached deep into their souls and pulled out amazing swim. Casey Merrill dropped 13 seconds off her 1650(19:32.70).  The MA swimmers where tired of being beat by OCCC swimmers all weekend in the 9-10 age group and this did not change the last day of competition. Erin Myers finished 2nd in the 100 free (1:01.73); Emily Barnard finished 7th in the 100 free (1:03.38), and Sam Boswell (1:06.30) and Amanda Nunan (1:07.41) had huge drops off their 100 times. Erin finished the meet w/ a 6th place finish in the 50 back and a 7th place finish in the 100 fly. Sam Boswell dropped 6 seconds off her 100 fly time.

The coaching staff couldn’t be prouder of our J.O. team. 12 swimmers qualified this year and hopefully we can qualify more for summer J.O.’s. The OCCC program continues to improve and produce fast swimmers who are recognized across the Mid Atlantic Region. Great Job once again!

  • JS "Last Chance" Meet Entries - due A.S.A.P !!!

  • Team News Via Email - If you did not already get a notice about this via email-hand your email address to Coach Billy Bob to be included in his emailing list.

  • Spring/Summer Session Plans - drop off your plans for spring session and summer session in the mail slot.  We need counts for each.  Spring session will run from approx. early March thru late May. JO qualifiers will finish their season with JO’s.  Everyone else will changeover in the first week of March.  Spring session is mostly stroke work and the only meet is often Eastern Regional.  Swimmers planning to travel to the Lancaster area for Long Course season should swim in the spring session.  For others, this is a good time for a break. Summer session picks up around Memorial Day and runs through the first week of August.  We usually break for the remainder of August and early Sept. allowing our swimmers time to get back into the swing of school.

  • Team Banquet - our swim team banquet is usually after Easter.  If you are taking off for spring session but wish to be included in the banquet, leave your address with your note of your intentions for spring and summer sessions.

  • Weather Closing - not that we’ve had to worry….but if the Ocean City schools are closed for weather, we are too.  If you have any doubts, tell your kids to go out and play.  We don’t have enough snow for it to become an issue.  Flooding is more of a problem as sometimes the Aquatic Center is high ground for parking in spring floods.

January 20, 2008 - Winter Carnival

Thank you to all of the parents and older swimmers that stepped up to help out at our meet.  This is the first meet in my history with our team where I haven't had a problem with getting enough help.  It was great to see everyone pitching in to run what I thought was an excellent meet.

I was impressed by the help Saturday night all  of the way to clean up time on Sunday.  You all were terrific.  If you have any small bits of constructive criticism, let me know on deck at practice this week.  That way, if something didn't work right, maybe we can come up with a solution before our summer season is upon us.  I had a good time.  It looked like the swimmers were enjoying themselves.  Thanks.

Thank you for your time and effort Michelle Santer, our Meet Director.
